Premessa obbligatoria al discorso che segue è che ogni parola può avere vari significati, e tra quelli disponibili in rete io scelgo sempre quelli che rispondono meglio alle definizioni che mi servono nell’ambito del quadro che sto delineando in questa sede. Se arrogare (R28) vuol dire “pretendere o attribuirsi qualcosa che non ci è dovuto o che non ci spetterebbe“, la superbia (R26) è una “esagerata stima di sé e dei proprî meriti (reali o presunti), che si manifesta esteriormente con un atteggiamento altezzoso e sprezzante e con un ostentato senso di superiorità nei confronti degli altri”. Adattati all’ambito conoscitivo, in relazione ai significati che ho dato alla cultura (R23) e all’ignoranza (R21), l’arrogante è privo di conoscenza e di consapevolezza, per cui è ignorante sia conoscitivamente che cognitivamente, il superbo ha la conoscenza ma ha poca consapevolezza, per cui è ignorante cognitivamente ma non conoscitivamente. Riprendendo il sottotitolo di questo richiamo, mentre chi parla in maniera arrogante sa meno di quanto vuol far credere di sapere agli altri, chi è superbo parte da una conoscenza effettiva che però interpreta a modo suo, pretendendo che quella sia l’unica interpretazione razionalmente valida, e chi la dovesse contestare lo starebbe facendo per ignoranza o per malafede, di qui i toni non proprio pacifici con cui si esprimono talvolta le persone superbe.


IGNORANZA SENZA SCAMPO O COMPENSATA. I due profili, arrogante e superbo, hanno in comune una carenza di consapevolezza, ma mentre l’arrogante non sa e prima di parlare farebbe bene a informarsi, il superbo sa ma ragiona irrazionalmente, considerando ovvio o logico ciò che non lo è necessariamente, di qui una autoesaltazione esagerata che sottende un atteggiamento che può non essere sopportato da alcuni ma che può dare una marcia in più per il raggiungimento degli obiettivi di qualsiasi tipo, propri, altrui o collettivi. Da questo emerge chiaramente come da un lato l’arroganza è un difetto in tutti i sensi e per questo va rifiutata con decisione, dall’altro lato la superbia ha in sé aspetti che compensano la poca consapevolezza.


RICONOSCERE O SOPPORTARE. Le descrizioni delle personalità arrogante e superba sarebbero inutili senza i due messaggi fondamentali, cioè

(1) che se una persona parla con apparente sicurezza e padronanza non è detto che quello che dice sia vero e che i ragionamenti che fa siano validi e

(2) che non sempre eventuali ragionamenti incoerenti vadano rifiutati perché possono rivelarsi utili.

Per cui occorre riconoscere gli arroganti indagando sulla veridicità di quello che dicono e sopportare i superbi quando i loro ragionamenti, per quanto incoerenti, sono utili, non egoisticamente ma per gli altri.

>Mentre l’ignoranza degli arroganti va riconosciuta con attenzione, quella dei superbi va sopportata solo se è utile altruisticamente<
